2008 Rolling Rankings
August 25, 2008: Updated rankings have been posted. Added: Junior's 2008 Northwest Forest Frenzy and 2008 United States Championships (2 events each). Deleted: 2007 Colorado Five-Day (4 events).
July 2, 2008: Rankings to include the BAOC Tahoe meet, and dated June 23, 2008, have been posted.
A revised schedule for updates is:
August 29 - add NWFF/JR meet(2), add LROC meet (2), drop RMOC meet (4)
October 18 - add CNYO/NA Champs (3)
November 14 - add NEOC meet (2), drop BAOC (2), drop CAOC (2), drop (LAOC 2)
December 15 - drop QOC meet (3), add BAOC (3?)
May 29, 2008: Rankings to include the DVOA Chasing the Star/US Team Trials have been posted.
The tentative schedule for updates is:
June 27 - add BAOC meet (3)
August 15 - add NWFF/JR meet(2), add LROC meet (2), drop RMOC meet (4)
October 4 - add CNYO/NA Champs (3)
October 31 - add NEOC meet (2), drop BAOC (2), drop CAOC (2), drop (LAOC 2)
November 21 - drop QOC meet (3), add BAOC (3?)
May 10, 2008: Updated rankings have been posted. Lots of changes - added the 2008 ROC US Middle Distance Championships (1 event), and the 2008 USMAOC West Point A-Meet (3 events). Also deleted the 2007 HVO A-Meet (2 events), the 2007 USMAOC West Point A-Meet (2 events), and the 2007 SMOC US Team Trials (3 events).
April 8, 2008: Flying Pig XII rankings have been posted.
March 24, 2008: Flying Pig: Each of the four events will be in the USOF rankings. For the Sprint, you are ranked in the Class which you register for, even if several courses are grouped together on one course. Example: Red and Blue classes are running the same Sprint course. You usually run as M45+, but you registered for the sprint events as M-21+. You will be ranked as M-21+.
As always, you can request that an event not be included in the USOF rankings, if the request is made before you start. This does not affect how you are scored at the meet. Requests must be made in writing to either Valerie Meyer or Sandy Fillebrown.
Relay Champs: Anyone successfully completing a US Champs Relay leg is eligible for a credit day. Credit days are only considered and used for the official end of year USOF rankings, and they are only applied if you do not have the minimum 4 event days on a course at the end of the year.
Junior Junior Relay participants are not eligible for a credit day.
March 3, 2008: Rankings have been posted with a date of April 1, 2008. No, it is not an April Fool's prank. There are only events dropping off in March (nine days total), so I have processed the rankings to reflect the dropped events all at once. The next change will be the addition of the four ranking events from the 2008 Flying Pig.
A note about the April 1, 2008 White rankings. Between March 2007 and February 2008, there were 16 White event days which went unranked because there were less than the required minimum of three M/F-10 and/or M/F-12 participants. We are experimenting with calculating the rolling rankings to include White events as long as there are two starters, of which at least one has a legal time. If it appears to give valid results we will consider making it permanent.
February 26, 2008: Rankings have been updated with the addition of the events from NTOA's Texas Stampede & Interscholastic Championships (2) and TSN's Western State & Intercollegiate Championships (3).
Additionally, JWOC rankings have been posted. These rankings include the Varsity courses from the Interscholastic Championships scored as M/F-20.
In the next couple of days, I will also post the rankings effective April 1, 2008. I will be rolling off the nine events from March 2-April 1, 2007, and the rankings will reflect the status of the M/F-20 competitors going into the Flying Pig weekend. The 2008 Flying Pig events are the last events which will be included in the rankings used to select the JWOC team.
February 11, 2008: Rankings for the NTOA Interscholastic Championships & Stampede and the TSN Western State & Intercollegiate Championships will be processed together and posted by the end of February.
January 23, 2008: Rankings have been posted for the first two A-meets of 2008.
Was this the first time that two A-meets were held on the same weekend?
With the start of the new year, I have done something a bit differently in reference to moving those competing on the same course as in 2007, but who are in a different age group. Last year, I waited until the person had competed in the new age group before moving all their results to the new age group. This year, in the interest of making things a bit easier for me, I have moved the results over now.
2007 Official Rankings
January 6, 2008: The review period is over, and the 2007 end-of-year rankings are now official. Rankings patches will be mailed out shortly. If you do not receive your patch(es) by the end of January, please contact Valerie Meyer.
In 2007, there were 308 patches earned by 287 people. This was down slightly from 314 patches to 293 people in 2006. Nathaniel Lyons (ROC) earned one gold (Orange) and two silvers (Green and Red), and twenty others earned two patches each.
December 21: Calculations for the award patches have been made, and the information has been added to the posted files.
November 12: Preliminary end-of-year rankings have been posted.
October 16: The M-21+ field was very strong at this weekend's BAOC Boggs Mountain event, so a rankings update was in order. Eric Bone's (COC) two 1st place finishes gained him four places in the Blue course rankings as he moved from #10 to #6. Eddie Bergeron (SVO) moved up to #3, and Wyatt Riley (DVOA) gained 3 spots to move into the top 10 at #9. Since, the top 10 includes 5 non-US eligible runners, it will be interesting to see how the rest of the year plays out.
With two very fine performances, Don Davis (QOC - M65+) moved up nine spots to take over the #1 overall ranking on the Brown course. Kirsten Hall (NEOC - F40+) retained her overall lead on the Green course. It was nice to see that White, Yellow, and Orange had the minimum numbers of participants to be ranked. The White course was especially impressive with eight runners in the F-10 category.
October 1: With five A-meets (11 ranking days) over a six week period, and with the 2006 GHO North American Championships dropping off on one of the off weeks, and in the interest of getting some other projects done, I have decided to consolidate things a bit for the last five events of the year.
The rankings posted on October 1, and post-dated as October 9, include the 2007 UNO Bolder Dash (Sept 29-30), and also reflect the deletion of the 2006 GHO North American Championships (3 events from October 6-8, 2006). So, this is how you stand as of October 9, 2007.
It is very likely that there will be no further changes posted until about a week after the US Champs. At that time, all events will be rolled on and off, and the November rankings will be the preliminary year-end rankings. The status of your USOF membership will be noted at that time, and a review period of four weeks will take place to allow competitors to report any errors in the data. As always, please feel free to report corrections, or to ask questions.
September 25: Rankings reflecting the addition of the two sprint events from the September 22 WCOC Sprint Finals, and the deletion of the three events from the 2006 CNYO event have been posted.
Next up, in early October, will be the addition of UNO's 2007 Boulder Dash, and the deletion of the three events from the 2006 GHO North American Championships.
August 25: Rankings posted effective August 20, 2007. Events deleted were the six events from the Wyoming/Colorado events last August. Events added were the four qualifying events from the 2007 Colorado Five-Day. The US Long Championships was excluded from the rankings because it did not have interval starts. Anyone needing this event to reach the minimum four events to be ranked in 2007 will receive a credit day. Credit days will not be included until the end-of-year rankings are processed in December.
The Orange rankings only include one new ranking day from Colorado since the meet did not have the minimum of five A-Meet runners on Orange except for the US Short Championships.
May 29: Rankings posted today, and dated June 26, 2007, cover the deletion of the 2006 SLOC events (May 19-21) and the 2006 BAOC events (June 24 & 25). Yes, the rankings are actually into the future. So, there will be a ten week break until after the Colorado events in August. Enjoy the summer, and keep up the training.
May 2: Complete White-Blue rankings through April 30 have been posted. Meet additions were HVO & USMAOC in April 2007, and meet deletions were COK & EMPO from April 2006. The 2006 LROC US Night-O Champs, though excluded from the Team Trials rankings, is included in the April 30 rankings for everyone including M/F-21+. Pre-trials rankings for M/F-21+ remain the ones listed as Team Trials M/F-21+.
May 1: The M/F-21+ rankings have been posted, and the rest will follow in a day or two. The M/F-21+ rankings include the usual meet additions (HVO & USMAOC meets in April 2007) and meet deletions (COK & EMPO meets in April 2006). Also, for the team trial classes only, the 2006 LROC US Night-O Champs have been excluded per the Team Trials rules.
April 03: The two events from the DVOA Fox Chaser at Fair Hill (Interscholastic Championships) have been added. Events deleted were the three events from the 2006 Flying Pig, and the 2006 SLOC Intercollegiate Championships a week ahead of schedule. This is why the rankings are dated April 9 instead of April 2. Look for the next update after the HVO event on April 21 and 22.
March 21: The 2007 Flying Pig XI added 4 events to the rankings. With just two weeks between the Pig and the DVOA Fair Hill Interscholastic Championships and A-Meet, I have listed the scores by race, but not separated by name. Look for an update soon after Fair Hill, which has 450+ registered athletes. The 2006 Flying Pig will drop off at the same time.
March 4: The rankings posted for March 4, 2007 included a second way to see your individual scores - in a table format (not included in the March 18 rankings). Future rolling rankings will be easier to sort and search on, but I hope you enjoy what we are able to provide you this time around. If you want to sort and view the data differently, and you have Internet Explorer (IE) and Excel, you can open any of the rankings web pages in IE, right click on the body of the page, and export to Excel.
How is the data displayed? On the front page for each course, you will see the rankings, as they have appeared for the last year. Linked from that page is a file with the "Individual Race Scores by Race" for each qualifying A-Meet. Included are the times and the ranking scores earned for each race. To see which race is which, you'll need to go to the "Event Names" page and look up the "Race #." You may want to print this out for reference.
You also have a choice of "Individual Scores by Name" which is in a table format.
Which races count towards your ranking?
Up to 4 races? They all count. Add them together and divide by the # of races. Example: Scores 100 + 80 + 70 + 50 = 300/4 = 75. So, your ranking is 75.
Over 4 races? Then, the best 4 count, and 1/2 of the rest count - but always the best ones.
Example: 10 races - 4 = 6. Divide 6/2 = 3. So, 4 + 3 = 7 races which count in the ranking. Add you 7 best scores together and divide by 7, and that is your ranking.
If you have an uneven number of races over 4, then 1/2 still count. Example: 9 races - 4 = 5. Divide 5/2 = 2.5. So, 4 + 2.5 = 6.5 races which count, including 1/2 of a race score.
New Class/Same Course in 2007?
You will continue to be ranked in your old class from 2006 until you compete in your new class in 2007, then all of your eligible results will move to your new class. This has to be done manually, so if I don't catch a change, and you end of being ranked in two classes on the same course, please let me know.
Changes for 2007
The new year brings some changes to the way the rankings are calculated.
Rules governing USOF Rankings were amended at the November 11, 2006 USOF meeting of the Board of Directors.
The rule was amended so that competitors who receive an MP, OT, DSQ or DNF are given a ranking score of 0 for the course and not the course time limit plus 20 minutes.
These 0 scores are not included in the iterative calculations used to determine course values but are included when determining the ranking of an individual competitor; that is, the 0's are scores that will either be thrown out or averaged into a competitor's ranking depending on how many results the competitor has.
2006 Official Rankings
As of Janauary 16, 2007, all 2006 events have been processed, and the official 2006 USOF rankings have been posted.
You received an official 2006 USOF end-of-year ranking, if you met the following requirements:
You were a USOF member anytime from January 1 through November 15 of 2006, and
you earned daily ranking points on at least four days on the same color course.
The rankings patches (award) will be mailed out by the end of March.
Rankings patches are awarded in the following manner to those qualifying for an official end-of-year ranking on all competitive courses (open courses do not earn patches):
The top three earn a gold patch.
Then the scores of the top three are averaged and multiplied by 80% and 70% and used to determine who earns a silver or bronze patch.
Example: for F-21+, the top three scores are 92.0, 89.4. 87.0, and average to 89.5.
89.5 x 80% = 71.6. Besides the top three, all eligible F-21+ with scores of 71.6 or higher earn a silver patch.
89.5 x 70% = 62.6. All eligible F-21+ with scores of 62.6 to 71.5 earn a bronze patch.
USOF Rankings Site
USOF established a new rankings committee which began operation in 2006. The new committee will maintain a rolling rankings list which will be updated as soon as possible after each event. The rankings will be web based and viewable at this site. Members of this committee are:
- Sandy Fillebrown (Coordinator)
- Valerie Meyer (Data)
- Kent Shaw (Webmaster)
For questions about the rankings please contact Valerie Meyer.
